Welcome to Southland Boys' High School


Southland Boys' High School has developed a celebrated reputation over the last 127 years as a traditional school with a contemporary heart. What attracts students to SBHS is this combination of old and new and the school motto, Not for school but for life we are learning, which is firmly embedded in all aspects of school life.

There is a deliberate emphasis on literacy (reading, writing and oracy) and numeracy. A wide curriculum has been designed with boys in mind and is offered so that all boys can achieve excellence at their level.

Education is about success across a wide range of activities. A visit to the school will reveal the wealth of facilities and opportunities available in sport, music, debating, technology, dance and drama as well as in academic endeavours. At SBHS the timetable, the curriculum, the method of delivery and the co-curricular activities are all deliberately designed to meet the needs of young men.

One of our most important assets is the determination of the staff to establish a school with a strong sense of family, of belonging. This is focused on a belief that our boys are learning to be learners for life and therefore need to develop and attain the skills that will be of service to them as citizens of the 21st Century. We offer unparalleled opportunities in leadership and mentoring to help our boys develop attributes such as strong self discipline, personal integrity, hard work, service to others and commitment to both academic and co-curricular achievement. SBHS has a staff that is committed to building professional relationships that will help students achieve these.

We aspire to and have achieved a reputation for being advocates for boys and boys' education. We have deep respect for our heritage and traditions but at the same time are continually looking ahead to innovations in curriculum planning and delivery and technologies to enchance our programmes.
