Southland Boys’ High School Library is an area of the school with growing opportunities for our students to access quality research material, learning skills, award-winning literature and popular fiction and non-fiction titles.



We also provide games such as chess, cards and dominoes for the students to play during intervals and lunchtimes.

We also have a team of student librarians who carry out duties at lunchtimes and during class visits to help students using the library.

Information Literacy and Research Skills

Ms. White, our Research & Learning Coordinator works
collaboratively with teachers to embed information literacy
and research skills into the curriculum, as well as teaches
specific skills such as; effective online searching; using
databases for research; note-taking techniques, and finding
and using information effectively.

The Tertiary Prep Programme

This is a series of six tutorials offered to Year 13 students,
designed to prepare them for the next level of research
and study required at university and polytechnic
institutions.  They cover topics including study skills,
exam preparation, active note-taking techniques, advanced
use of scholarly databases, time management and
organisation skills.

Qualified and experienced library staff select, purchase and promote reading at all levels of the school. Reading for pleasure as well as appropriate reading for NCEA is supported and boys can request specific reading recommendations when they visit the library.

Junior School

Year 7 and 8 students have regular weekly visits providing 
opportunities to not only find good books to read but also 
to participate in games, quizzes and activities designed to 
help them engage in finding and using good information.

Homework Help

AnyQuestions is a NZ site, supported by the Ministry of
Education, which provides online support by librarians
around the country.

And ManyAnswers will provide information about hot
topics and popular search requests.
