Southland Boys’ High School invites students the chance to take part in a unique, once-in-a-lifetime educational journey through Europe in April 2027. Over 17 days, a group of students will travel to some of the most significant World War I and World War II sites - bringing history to life beyond the classroom and deepening their understanding of the past.

About the Tour
This tour is more than a trip - it’s a journey of remembrance, learning, and connection. Students will visit key European sites that shaped the course of global history and reflect on the role New Zealand, and Southland Boys’ Old Boys, played in the World Wars.
Tour Overview
Dates: April School Holidays, 2027
Duration: 17 days
Participants: Up to 40 students, accompanied by 3 staff and 2 parent helpers
Tour Provider: Defining Moments – specialists in school-based historical tours
Destinations Include:
- Dachau (Germany)
- Passchendaele & Flanders Field (Belgium)
- The Somme, Le Quesnoy, and Normandy (France)
- Paris
These sites have been chosen for their historical significance and their direct connection to New Zealand’s military involvement. Where possible, the group will visit graves of former SBHS students to pay tribute.
Estimated Cost
Between $10,000 and $12,000 NZD, including:
- International flights
- Accommodation
- Breakfasts and dinners
- Guided tours and activities
- Ground transport
Fundraising Opportunities
Students will be encouraged to participate in fundraising activities. While each student is responsible for their own fundraising, school staff will help organise group events such as sausage sizzles and jingo nights. Group fundraising proceeds will be shared among contributors.
