Year 7 & year 8

Building the Essentials

In Years 7 and 8, students learn in mixed-ability classes, supported by teachers skilled in literacy, spoken language, numeracy, and digital learning. Technology is seamlessly integrated into lessons to enhance engagement and understanding.

Our key focus is literacy and numeracy, and our homeroom teachers have completed extensive professional learning in structured approaches to both. These foundational skills are embedded in every class, ensuring students develop the confidence and ability to access the wider curriculum as they progress to senior years.

National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA)

Te Taumata Mātauranga ā-Motu kua Taea

NCEA is a standards-based qualification in New Zealand. This means there are clearly defined Standards that students work towards achieving.

Each Standard can be assessed either internally (completed during school time) or externally (through end-of-year exams). Internal assessments may include tests, research assignments, or practical tasks. Every Standard carries a specific number of credits, and students accumulate these credits to gain NCEA Level 1, 2, or 3.

These qualifications reflect the depth of a student’s knowledge and their academic progress throughout their course of study. Some students complete Level 1 over 1.5 to 2 years, while others may begin working towards certain Level 1 standards as early as Year 10. Teachers and academic advisors work closely with families to ensure each student follows a pathway that best supports their learning style and future goals.

NCEA Level 1

NCEA Level 1 is generally completed in Year 11. To achieve Level 1 NCEA, a student needs to gain 80 credits at Level 1 or above. These credits can come from a range of subjects and assessment standards. In addition, the student must meet the literacy and numeracy requirements, which are 10 credits in literacy and 10 credits in numeracy.

NCEA Level 2

NCEA Level 2 is generally completed in Year 12.

To achieve Level 2 NCEA, a student needs to gain 60 credits at Level 2 or above, along with 20 additional credits that can come from any level. The student must also have already met the literacy and numeracy requirements of 10 credits in each area.

NCEA Level 3

NCEA Level 3 is generally completed in Year 13.

To achieve Level 3 NCEA, a student needs to gain 60 credits at Level 3 or above, plus 20 additional credits at Level 2 or above. As with the other levels, the student must also have met the literacy and numeracy requirements of 10 credits each.

ENDORSMENTS

Endorsements are additional recognitions that students can achieve within the NCEA framework to show a higher level of performance and sustained academic success in their studies.

For each standard, a student can be awarded:

  • Achieved (A)

  • Achieved with Merit (M)

  • Achieved with Excellence (E)

Endorsements are awarded at Merit or Excellence level when a student consistently achieves these grades across a number of credits in a course or qualification.

There are two main types of endorsements:

  • Course Endorsements (Subject)

Students must achieve 14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence level within a single subject. This must include at least 3 credits from internally assessed standards and 3 credits from externally assessed standards.

  • Certificate Endorsements (Entire Level)

Students must achieve 50 or more credits at Merit or Excellence level at the same NCEA level. These credits can come from approved standards across all subjects within a single year. There is no specific requirement for a set number of internal or external credits.

UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE (UE)

University Entrance (UE) is the minimum qualification required to enter most undergraduate university degree programmes in New Zealand. To gain UE, students must achieve NCEA Level 3 and meet specific subject and literacy requirements that ensure they are prepared for tertiary study.

To be awarded UE, students must achieve:

  • 14 credits in three approved Level 3 subjects

  • 10 literacy credits (5 reading and 5 writing, from approved standards)

  • 10 numeracy credits (usually gained at Level 1 or higher)

Approved subjects are those recognised by NZQA as providing appropriate preparation for university study, such as English, sciences, mathematics, social sciences, and other Level 3 courses. Meeting these requirements demonstrates that a student has the academic skills and knowledge needed to succeed at university level.
