A beautiful sunny day made for great racing at the Southland Secondary Schools Cross Country in Te Anau on Wednesday 13th May.

Our boys ran with confidence and commitment, pushing themselves throughout every stage of the race. It was great to see so many strong finishes, with several boys showing impressive endurance and resilience on a challenging track. Their effort, sportsmanship, and willingness to give their best made it a very successful day. Well done to all the boys for representing our school with pride and enthusiasm.

Huge congratulations to Ollie Keast on an outstanding performance on the international stage! Ollie has taken out Gold for New Zealand in the Team Pursuit at the International Track Series in Malaysia - an incredible achievement.

He didn’t stop there, also securing a Bronze in the Madison and a 2nd place finish in the Omnium Elimination. A fantastic all-round result and valuable racing experience at this Australasian event.

Ollie will be returning home over the coming week. Safe travels and well done - we’re so proud of you!

In a letter from Mayor Tom Campbell, Corey was recognised not only for his creativity and writing skill, but for the maturity and respect he showed in capturing the meaning of Anzac Day and the importance of remembrance.

Corey has been awarded a prize and has also been given the honour of reading his poem at The Invercargill Anzac Day Dawn Service - a truly special moment!

2026 South Island Secondary Schools Moto X, held on March 28 in Mosgiel and hosted by the Mosgiel District Motorcycle Club at Lee Stream.

With 165 riders competing in challenging but sunny conditions and no injuries reported, the day was a great success and a real credit to the skill, sportsmanship, and attitude of all involved. The track itself was fast and open, with technical sections, muddy patches, and deep ruts creating some challenging and memorable moments throughout the race.

After losing the trophy for the first time last year, our team of 24 riders were determined to win it back and rose to the challenge from the outset. The 90 minute race tested both endurance and consistency, with riders completing as many laps as possible in the allotted time.

Our senior riders set the tone early, with Tom Johnson leading the charge, followed by Tim Johnstone, Rylan Casey, Cooper Gow, Oliver Roubroeks, and Alex Chamberlain. The younger riders also stepped up, gaining valuable experience and showing great promise for the future.

We are proud to have reclaimed the trophy after a strong challenge from Fiordland College. There were also some excellent individual performances, including a second place class finish for Angus Levett and Thomas Johnson, alongside other strong results across the team. It was a true team effort.

Thank you to the organisers, supporters, and families who helped make the event so well run. With the season coming to an end, it has been a great year for the team and we look forward to defending the South Island title in 2027.

At the end of Term 1 our Year 9 Agriculture and Horticulture class had the fantastic opportunity to visit So Sweet Farms in Edendale, giving students a real world insight into modern food production and farming technology.

During the visit, students were able to see carrots being packaged and prepared for sale, gaining a first-hand understanding of the journey from paddock to plate. One of the highlights was watching the laser weeder in action, an impressive piece of technology that has transformed how weeds are managed on the farm while reducing chemical use.

The boys showed genuine curiosity and asked thoughtful questions throughout the visit. Topics ranged from the germination and growing process of carrots and other crops, through to harvesting methods and how new technology like the laser weeder has improved efficiency and productivity on the farm.

SBHS and our Year 9 students would like to sincerely thank @sosweetproduce Farms for welcoming us and sharing their knowledge. A special thanks goes to Jesse and Rach for taking the time to show us around and for patiently answering all of the students’ questions. Experiences like this are invaluable in helping students connect classroom learning with real world applications.

Last Sunday, the 29th March, we had a group of 8 swimmers (Luke Bigger, Manuera Dowling, Ted Duncan, Alesana Lafoga, John Laurenson, Alexander Parven, Joshua Smith, and Baxter Tamariki) compete at the Southland School Swimming competition at Splash Palace. They all competed really well and demonstrated great sportsmanship! Thank you to SBHS’s Swimming Captain Luke Bigger for managing the team.

At the 2026 South Island Novice Championship for Boxing, held at Woolston Boxing in Christchurch on the 27 & 28th March, both Israel (Izzy) Henwood and Zac Mulligan stepped up and delivered outstanding performances across the two days of competition! 🥇

Day 1 (Saturday):

A snap shot of action in the Art Room Term 1.

Our Year 9 and 10 students have been diving into new artistic processes as part of their arts kaupapa. Year 9 are bringing the “Great Outdoors” to life through layered spray-paint stencils, while Year 10 have been exploring cyanotype printmaking - using light-sensitive emulsion and sunlight to create striking, one-of-a-kind images.

Meanwhile, our senior students are hard at work on their NCEA Internal Achievement Standards. Such as Charlie Mason’s stunning cow painting piece on MDF!

We’re looking forward to seeing even more creativity unfold next term!

Ollie Keast has been selected to represent New Zealand at the Junior U19 Track Cycling World Championships - an incredible achievement that reflects years of dedication, discipline, and hard work.

The championships will take place in Zolder, Belgium this August, where Ollie will compete in the Team Pursuit as well as other events as part of the Cycling NZ squad.

He heads into the competition in great form, following a strong performance at the recent NZ Track Championships in Invercargill where he brought home multiple medals.

We’re proud to see Ollie take on the world stage and can’t wait to follow his journey!
